QoE Database for HTTP-based Video Streaming

Introduction

Newly developed HTTP-based video streaming technologies enable flexible rate-adaptation under varying channel conditions. Accurately predicting the users' Quality of Experience (QoE) for rate-adaptive HTTP video streams is thus critical to achieve efficiency. To deepen the understanding of QoE, we built a database of rate varying video sequences to simulate quality fluctuations commonly encountered in video streaming applications. We then conducted a subjective study to measure two important aspects of QoE, i.e., the time-varying subjective qualities (TVSQ) and the overall quality (OQ). The TVSQ of a video is the up-to-the-moment subjective quality as the video is played. The OQ is the subjective quality judgment after the whole video has been played. We make the video database along with the measured TVSQs and OQs publicly available. We hope this database can be useful for developing and validating QoE models for HTTP-based video streams.

Database Description

The database consists of 3 reference videos. The reference videos are constructed from 8 high quality, uncompressed video clips with different content. These clips have a spatial resolution of 720p (1280x720) and a frame rate of 30 fps. For each reference video, 5 bitrate-varying videos are constructed by adjusting the encoding bitrate of H.264 video encoder. In sum, the database contains 15 bitrate-varying videos. The time-varying subjective qualities (TVSQ) and the overall qualities (OQ) of the bitrate-varying videos are also included in the database.
